What Do You Really Want? (Why Coaching May Not Be What You Think It Is)

Nobody "Buys" Coaching.

Let’s be honest: nobody wakes up in the morning excited to "buy" coaching. We don't buy services; we invest in desired outcomes. We invest in where we want to go, not just where we are.

If you were to treat yourself as an investment—like a stock or a business venture—what is the dividend you are looking for?

What is it that you really want?

It’s a deceptively simple question.

When we start a conversation with someone just starting their journey of being coached, it might begin with simple prompts or specific professional goals. But very quickly, those questions will help you realize something profound: You are creating everything that happens in your life.

That is the pivotal moment. Once you realize you have that agency, the ceiling lifts. You stop looking for small fixes and start dreaming bigger.

The Gap Between Success and Satisfaction

To illustrate this, let’s look at a specific group we often see this dynamic play out with: Financial Advisors.

Typically, an advisor spends their first 5 to 15 years in "Survival Mode." The internal monologue is constant: "I need more accounts. I need to survive. I need to hustle."

Eventually, they succeed. They accumulate a massive book of business. They might even buy books from retiring advisors. On paper, they have "made it."

But then, a new reality sets in. They realize, "I don’t have any time."

They have success, but they don't have a life. They want to be present at home. They want to work with higher-net-worth families. They want to stop being "on call" 24/7. They know they should segment their book and offload the non-ideal accounts, but they are frozen.

Why? Because they are hanging onto a Scarcity Mindset (a "Transactional" mindset based on the fear of losing revenue and the fear of hurting clients' feelings) when their next level requires an Abundance Mindset (a "Relational" mindset based on "what you want," not "what you do").

Closing the Gap

For these advisors, the move from Transactional to Relational—going deeper with fewer, ideal people—feels risky. They know the strategy, but they can't make the shift alone because the old habits of "survival" run too deep.

This is where the "investment" pays off.

Coaching isn't about telling you how to do your job; you already know that. Coaching is about closing the gap between the success you have and the life you actually want.

It is about moving from:

  • Scarcity to Abundance
  • Busy to Productive
  • "I have to" to "I choose to"

The Return on Investment

If you were to invest in yourself today, what is the outcome you're chasing?

Maybe it's time. Maybe it's peace of mind. Maybe it's the courage to say "no" to the good so you can say "yes" to the great.

You don't need to "buy" a coach. You need to decide if you are worth the investment to get to that next level.

You have the power to change the trajectory. Are you ready to use it?

Maybe you've heard a friend or co-working raving about theirs, or maybe you've come across somebody's Pinterest board. Maybe you've even scoffed at that friend about their Vision Board, doubting the power of something so basic and simple, writing it off as nothing more than some sort of "dream life collage."  But a Vision Board is more than that. It's so much more.  It's about turning your dreams into a roadmap for success—something to act as a const...
